Equip your DOT & non-regulated supervisors with Reasonable Suspicion Training.

Train your supervisors to spot signs of drug and alcohol impairment with 49 CFR Part 382-compliant training. Required for DOT safety-sensitive roles and a smart best practice for any drug-free workplace. Available online, instructor-led, or on-site.

What Is Reasonable Suspicion Training?

Reasonable suspicion training teaches supervisors and managers how to recognize the physical and behavioral signs of drug and alcohol impairment in the workplace. When you have reasonable suspicion that an employee is under the influence, your supervisors need to be trained to document their observations and follow proper procedures before sending the employee for testing.

Reasonable Suspicion Training for DOT and non-regulated employers.

TEAM provides reasonable suspicion training programs for both DOT and non-regulated employers, available online, instructor-led, or on-site.

For DOT-regulated employers:
Reasonable suspicion training is not optional. Under 49 CFR Part 382, all supervisors who oversee safety-sensitive employees must complete training before they can make a reasonable suspicion determination. This applies to employers regulated by FMCSA (trucking), FAA (aviation), FRA (rail), FTA (transit), PHMSA (pipeline), and USCG (maritime).

For non-regulated employers: While not federally mandated, reasonable suspicion training is a critical best practice for any employer with a drug-free workplace policy. Trained supervisors make better-documented, legally defensible determinations, reducing the risk of wrongful termination claims and protecting both your company and your employees.

Is Reasonable Suspicion Training required by law?

For DOT-regulated employers, yes. Under 49 CFR Part 382, all supervisors who oversee safety-sensitive employees must complete reasonable suspicion training before they can direct an employee to submit to testing. This applies to employers regulated by FMCSA, FAA, FRA, FTA, PHMSA, and USCG. For non-DOT employers, training is not federally mandated but is strongly recommended as a best practice for any company with a drug-free workplace policy.

How long is Reasonable Suspicion Training?

DOT-compliant reasonable suspicion training requires a minimum of 60 minutes on drug indicators and 60 minutes on alcohol indicators, for a total of 2 hours. TEAM's training programs meet or exceed these minimums. Non-DOT training programs may vary in length depending on the depth of content and delivery format.

Who needs Reasonable Suspicion Training?

Any supervisor or manager who may need to make a reasonable suspicion determination should complete training. For DOT-regulated employers, this includes all front-line supervisors of safety-sensitive employees, not just safety directors or HR managers. For non-DOT employers, training any supervisor who oversees employees covered by your drug-free workplace policy is a best practice.

How often does Reasonable Suspicion Training need to be renewed?

DOT regulations do not specify a mandatory renewal interval for reasonable suspicion training. However, annual refresher training is a widely recommended best practice to keep your supervisors current on regulatory changes, emerging substance trends, and proper documentation procedures. TEAM offers refresher courses in all delivery formats.

What happens after a supervisor makes a reasonable suspicion determination?

After a trained supervisor documents specific observations indicating possible drug or alcohol use, the employee is directed to submit to reasonable suspicion testing. The employer must arrange transportation to the collection site (the employee should not drive). TEAM can coordinate testing through our network of 20,000+ collection sites with 24/7 availability for post-determination testing.

Can Reasonable Suspicion Training be completed online?

Yes. TEAM offers fully online, self-paced reasonable suspicion training that meets DOT requirements. Online training includes interactive modules, knowledge checks, and a certificate of completion. Many employers prefer online training for its flexibility - supervisors can complete it on their own schedule without travel or scheduling logistics.

What is the difference between DOT and non-DOT Reasonable Suspicion Training?

DOT reasonable suspicion training must meet specific regulatory requirements under 49 CFR Part 382, including minimum hour requirements (60 min drug + 60 min alcohol) and specific content standards. Non-DOT training covers similar material but can be customized to your company's specific policies and does not need to meet federal hour minimums. TEAM provides both DOT-compliant and non-DOT training programs.
